HATE GROUP PLANS COURT PROTEST DURING PHELPS-ROPER HEARING

March 1, 2010 Shirley Phelps-Roper, the de facto matron of the hate-spewing Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, KS, is doing everything within her power to delay justice as a trial looms over her in Nebraska for suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and desecration of the United States flag.

On Friday, March 5, 2010 her group will be picketing the Sarpy County Complex in Papillion, NE, where she is to appear at 1 pm in a pre-trial hearing for criminal court for the State v. Shirley L. Phelps-Roper, cases CR070005060 and CR070005061. The church will, also, be targeting the nearby Millard North High School. Some involved in the church will be in Los Angeles over the weekend to protest the 82nd Annual Academy Awards and nearby Jewish temples.   

The criminal accusations stem from a June 5, 2007 incident in Bellevue, Nebraska, during the church’s picketing of an American soldier’s funeral. Phelps-Roper, born on Halloween 1957, is accused of four misdemeanors in Sarpy County Court after being arrested for what authorities say were violations of 1977 Nebraska state statute, when she had her then 10-year-old son Jonah stomp on an American flag near the funeral. Also, she is accused of wrapping a flag around her waist and letting it drag the ground. Phelps-Roper was taken into custody and later released on a $150 bond.

The church was picketing the funeral of 29-year-old Nebraska Army National Guard Spc. William Bailey III, who died on May 25, 2007 two weeks before he was to return home, when an explosive device struck his vehicle near Taji, Iraq. Bailey was killed during an explosion that injured three fellow Nebraskans. All were assigned to providing security for military convoys attached to the 755th Chemical Company. Bailey, a former firefighter, was credited with saving two lives before succumbing to his injuries and was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star for his valor.  He left behind a wife and five children.

The Westboro Baptist Church declared his death an act of vengence by God, because America condones homosexuality.     

Phelps-Roper and her father Fred Roper have become infamous with their “God Hates Fags” pickets across the nation and the turmoil they have created at the funerals of homosexuals, soldiers, and others.

As this misdemeanor case crawls into its third year, Roper-Phelps, an attorney, has been successful in delaying a final conclusion by filing lawsuits targeting the statute she has been charged under and against various figures involved in the case, such as Sarpy County Judge Todd Hutton, who had to recuse himself in early February after being named in a civil action by Roper-Phelps’ attorney Bassel El-Kasaby.

Douglas County Judge Lawrence Barrett was then assigned to the case, but he is now being accused by Roper-Phelps’ attorney of being unacceptable after claiming Barrett was a one-time member of the Patriot Guard Riders, an organization of bikers, who protect the funeral services of soldiers from the likes of the Westboro Baptist Church. For the time being, Barrett remains as presiding judge, but that could change during Friday’s arraignment.

On Monday morning Hate Trackers contacted Phelps-Roper by phone, but she chose not to make a statement.

In a press release distributed online by the Westboro Baptist Church, they claim about Friday’s action:

This is not a picket, but instead is a great door of utterance as the state of Nebraska has put a servant of the Living God on trial for words spoken in the name of the Blessed Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It will not go well for any who do that, but in the mean time we are happy to be a gazing stock and a spectacle for the whole world to see the great deliverance God will bring.
